Timber as a construction material: the case for it
Timber has been used in buildings for thousands of years, from simple shelters to complex load-bearing structures. That longevity is not nostalgia — it reflects the material's genuine advantages: natural thermal insulation, structural strength, workability, and carbon storage throughout the life of the product.
For windows specifically, timber provides a naturally low-conductivity frame that does not require the thermal break engineering that aluminium profiles demand. The wood itself is the insulator.

Modern performance timber windows are not cut from a single piece of lumber. Nordvest windows are manufactured using engineered laminated pine — three sections bonded together, with each laminate oriented to counteract the natural movement of wood across the grain.
The outer two laminates are heartwood pine: the dense, resin-saturated core of the tree. Heartwood forms as a pine tree matures — the innermost cells die and fill with resin, creating a zone that is highly resistant to rot and insect attack, without pressure treatment or chemical preservatives. The growth rings on the inner laminate are regulated for density and dimensional stability.

Species options

Lifespan and maintenance

Maintenance for exposed timber windows is straightforward: periodic inspection of painted or oiled surfaces, reapplication every 5–10 years on exterior faces, and annual lubrication of hardware. This is considerably less demanding than maintaining older softwood windows made from lower-grade timber.
Thermal performance
Timber is a poor conductor of heat — a property that makes it an inherently good window frame material. Unlike aluminium frames, which require a thermally broken profile to achieve competitive U-values, timber frames perform well thermally without engineering workarounds.
