Modern Edge Glass

Edge glass windows, sometimes called flush or frameless glazing have glass that extends to cover the outer face of the frame, eliminating any visible frame element on the exterior. The result is a sleek, flush elevation with maximum glazed area. Available with 50mm triple glazed units for Passivhaus or low-energy compatible performance.

What is edge glass?

Windows with Edge or Stepped Glass, sometimes referred to as frameless windows, offer a sleek and minimalist appearance that gives new houses and buildings a modern feel for the future, a window trend that has become more and more popular over the past few years. The popularity has grown with new house builders and renovators of older housing who wish to have the juxtaposition of old and new when building contemporary additions to existing homes.

Flush elevations

The window’s minimalist feel means that you can have a flush looking external elevation. This solution provides a greater sense of space, more glass surface area and improved thermal efficiency and low U-values* for achieving Passivhaus standards whne using triple glazed edge glazing units. Windows with edge glass will give a stylish look to many modern, contemporary building projects.

Thermal performance

Edge glass windows are supplied with 50mm triple glazed units as standard, achieving the same Passivhaus compatible U-values as the standard Nordvest triple glazed range. The flush configuration also allows a full-depth frame. The standard 109mm frame depth can be extended to suit the full ingo depth of the wall construction, important for thick insulated wall builds where the window needs to sit deep in the reveal. For further detail on glazing performance, see our triple glazing and passive house glazing pages.

Best application — fixed frames

Edge glass has the greatest visual impact on fixed frame windows, where the entire opening is glazed and there is no opening sash to interrupt the flush surface. It can also be applied to opening windows, though the visible hardware of hinges and handles on the opening leaf means the frameless effect is more pronounced on fixed lights. For large picture windows and corner glazing in contemporary projects, edge glass fixed frames are the specification of choice.

Maintenance

The external sealed glass covering the frame makes the exterior of edge glass windows completely maintenance free, there is no exposed timber or painted surface on the outside face. This makes edge glass a practical as well as an aesthetic choice for projects where external maintenance access is difficult or undesirable.
