Why Do Triple Glazed Windows Get Frost on the Outside?

If frost forms on the outside of your triple glazed windows on cold mornings, your windows are performing exactly as they should. This guide explains why it happens and what, if anything, you should do about it.

Frost on the exterior of triple glazed windows is one of the most common calls we receive in winter. Homeowners worry that something has gone wrong. In almost every case, the opposite is true.

Why it happens

Triple glazed windows are so well insulated that very little heat escapes from inside the building through the glazing. As a result, the outer pane of glass stays close to the outdoor air temperature — often below zero on clear, cold nights.

When the outer glass surface is colder than the dew point of the outdoor air, moisture in the atmosphere condenses and freezes on the glass. This is the same process that causes frost to form on car roofs and grass — surfaces that have cooled below freezing overnight.

A single- or double-glazed window rarely frosts on the exterior because heat escaping from indoors keeps the outer surface warmer. If you have frost on the outside of your triple glazed windows but not your neighbours' double-glazed ones, your windows are outperforming theirs.

Is it a problem?

No. External frost is cosmetic and temporary — it clears within minutes once the sun reaches the glass. It does not indicate a seal failure, condensation between the panes, or any defect in the glazing unit.

The only practical concern is visibility first thing in the morning on east-facing windows. If this is a regular issue on a window you need clear early in the day, the solutions below can help.

What you can do

In most cases, nothing needs to be done — the frost will clear naturally. If you want to reduce the frequency:

  • Reduce indoor humidity. Lower humidity inside means less moisture in the air that circulates against the glass. Using extractor fans consistently in kitchens and bathrooms makes a noticeable difference.
  • Slightly increase indoor temperature. A warmer interior raises the surface temperature of the inner pane marginally, which can reduce the degree of cooling on the outer pane through conduction — though the effect is small with well-insulated glazing.
  • External blinds or shutters. An external blind or shutter traps a layer of air against the glass overnight, raising the outer pane surface temperature. This is more relevant for Passivhaus builds where shading is already part of the design.

What it definitely is not

External frost is sometimes confused with internal condensation, which does indicate a problem. To tell the difference: internal condensation appears on the room-facing surface of the glass and does not disappear as the day warms up. A failed glazing unit seal causes condensation or misting between the panes — inside the sealed unit itself, not on the external surface. External frost is on the outermost face of the glass and clears quickly in sunlight.
