Double Glazing vs Triple Glazing: How to Choose

Choosing between double and triple glazing comes down to five factors: your project budget, thermal performance target, site exposure, acoustic requirements, and solar control needs. This guide walks through each one.

For most new build and renovation projects in the UK, the right choice between double and triple glazing isn't immediately obvious. Both options have improved significantly over the last decade, and the cost gap has narrowed. The difference is now less about price and more about what your project requires.

1. Budget

The price difference between double and triple glazing is smaller than many people expect — typically around 5–10% on the glazing cost. When you factor that into the total window budget, it's rarely the deciding factor. If your project has the thermal performance requirements to justify triple glazing, the cost difference is almost always worth it.

2. Thermal performance

This is usually the most important factor. Triple glazing achieves whole-window U-values (Uw) of 0.8 W/m²K or below — the level required for Passivhaus certification and most low energy builds. Standard double glazing typically achieves around Uw 1.2 W/m²K.

If you're building to Passivhaus principles, pursuing a low-energy house, or simply want to minimise heat loss in an exposed location, triple glazing is the right specification. If your project has more modest thermal targets and a sheltered site, high-performance double glazing may be sufficient.

3. Site exposure

For buildings on exposed sites — particularly those with large glazed areas facing prevailing winds — triple glazing provides a practical benefit beyond thermal performance. Three panes of glass flex less than two under wind loading, which can cause cold draughts near large double-glazed units. If your site is coastal or elevated, or you're specifying large picture windows, triple glazing is the more comfortable choice.

4. Sound reduction

Triple glazing does reduce airborne sound compared with double glazing, but the relationship isn't straightforward. For general traffic noise, triple glazing offers a modest improvement. For specific frequency problems — low rumble from motorways, for example — an asymmetric double-glazed unit (using two different glass thicknesses) can sometimes outperform standard triple glazing. If acoustic performance is a primary requirement, discuss your specific situation with us rather than defaulting to triple.

5. Solar control

Adding a third pane of glass changes how a window transmits solar energy. Two values matter here: the g-value (solar heat transmittance — how much warmth enters the room) and the Lt-value (light transmittance — how much daylight comes through). Triple glazing with a standard low-e coating reduces both compared with double glazing.

For south-facing elevations in a Passivhaus, solar gain through the glazing is part of the heating strategy — so specifying the wrong glass could actually increase heating demand. For other orientations, or for rooms with overheating risk, the reduced solar gain of triple glazing may be exactly what you want.
